2022 Audi A8 Overview

Audi’s A8 first arrived in 1994 with the D2 generation, and it was their first entrant into the full-size luxury sedan segment. It has proven itself to be quite a strong competitor in the segment, and the latest one carries that torch forward. It first appeared in 2017, but for 2022, Audi has given it a minor refresh and simplified the lineup, in order to make it more competitive against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which has a class-leading luxurious interior, and the game-changing new BMW 7-Series. The front end is still unapologetically Audi, but there’s a new headlight design with Audi’s most recent DRL signature. There’s a black exterior trim package now, like most other Audi models offer.

The side profile remains the same, and Audi now offers a few new alloy wheels, while the rear gets revised taillights, which now incorporate OLED technology as standard. While Audi has always offered a plethora of powertrains on the A8, the 2022 A8 lineup is down to just two powertrains. Like almost everyone else, Audi has also shifted their focus to SUVs and electrification, so the 2022 A8 lineup reflects the changing times and what customers prefer in this vehicle. The trim level choice is also much simpler, the A8 only comes in long wheelbase “L” form now, and you can have either the A8 or the S8. The S-line exterior styling package is also standard fare.

2022 Audi A8 Powertrains And Drivetrains

Audi has significantly pared down the 2022 A8’s lineup. The A8 itself only comes one way, as an L model, and as a hybrid only. Even though Audi offered the W12 engine on the D5 A8 previously, that engine is only doing duty in Bentley models these days. The hybrid A8 uses a 3.0-liter V6, which works with an electric motor to deliver 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Quattro AWD is standard, and the power gets to the wheels through an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

The other way to have the 2022 A8 is to have the 2022 S8. This model was available previously, and it’s continuing into 2022, making it the only way to have your A8 with a V8 engine, or indeed, anything more than a V6. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo lump appears under the hood of a variety of VW Group products, notably Porsche and Bentley as well. In the S8, it puts out 563 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, making the S8 a true sleeper, and a fantastic luxury cruiser that just so happens to rival some supercars in performance. Otherwise, the A8 does luxury very well, thanks to Predictive Air Suspension and appropriate chassis tuning. It is very much a car that you’d rather be in the back seat than behind the wheel.

2022 A8 Comfort And Quality

On the inside, Audi appears to have adopted a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” strategy, as it’s pretty much exactly the same as before. The only difference is, the wild double twin-spoke steering wheel of the non S-line A8 models is now history, as every A8 comes standard with S-line. The A8 pioneered Audi’s current interior design language, so it’s only right that very little has changed in here. The quality is top tier, the rear seat room is exceptional, and it’s very luxurious.

The option list is vast, as befits a luxury full-size sedan like the A8. 22-way power seats, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, OLED taillights, and adaptive air suspension are all standard. There are a few option packages available, which include things like interior ambient lighting, Intersection Assist, heated rear armrests, four-wheel steering, dual-pane laminated side glass, a heads-up display, and a massage function for the driver’s seat. Not a bad equipment list, overall. For $3,900 extra, Audi will paint the exterior in any color of your choice, and for $2,750, you can have the Black optic Plus package, which blacks out every piece of trim on the exterior for a much more stealthy look. The A8 theoretically seats five passengers, but it’s at its best as a four-seater. The trunk boasts 12.5 cubic feet of space.

2022 A8 Pricing And Launch

The 2022 Audi A8 is available to order as of late summer of 2022. Prices start at a surprisingly reasonable $86,500, and the S8 starts at $116,900. While the Audi A8 is a bit older than the most recent efforts from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, it’s still a competitive entrant in the segment, thanks to its approach to luxury. It’s typically Audi, not trying to set the world on fire with its styling or rear-seat entertainment systems. Just a typical, ultra luxurious limo. The sedan segment isn’t too long for this world, but the A8 is still a solid example of the breed.
